COMMUTERS using the LRT can earn reward points for “feeding” recycling machines at two stations in Kuala Lumpur, reported The Star.

Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, in a press statement, said reverse vending machines (RVMs) have been placed at the Masjid Jamek and KLCC stations, as part of the company’s initiative to strengthen sustainability practices and support the development of sustainable urban mobility.

The implementations, it said, was in line with Prasarana’s sustainability roadmap, which targets a recycling rate of 30% by 2030, while encouraging recycling practices among public transport users and urban communities.

Prasarana group chief health, safety, security, environment and sustainable development officer Idzqandar Abu Bakar said the installation of RVMs at high-traffic rail stations provided passengers with more access to technology-driven and incentive-based recycling facilities.

“This approach not only simplifies the recycling process, but also encourages positive behavioural change through the use of smart technology and reward systems.

“It also supports Prasarana’s efforts to build a more sustainable public transport ecosystem,” he said.

Among the machines introduced was Klean, an artificial intelligence-based RVM that accepted plastic bottles and cans.
