UN Calls for Global AI Dialogue as Community Backlash Freezes USD 68 Billion in U.S. Data Centres

NEW YORK – UN Secretary-General António Guterres asked major tech companies to develop bilateral channels for AI governance, warning that unchecked AI expansion risks worsening global systemic challenges. The diplomatic appeal comes at a time of widespread domestic market friction. According to new industry data from Data Centre Watch, local community opposition to skyrocketing power consumption and severe cooling water demand has prevented or delayed 45 data centre projects worth more than USD 68 billion in the United States. As regional governments impose moratoriums and strict closed-loop water and energy conservation frameworks, data centre developers and high-density computing operators are under intense pressure to implement sustainable infrastructure, heat recovery solutions, and certified liquid coolant recycling, presenting significant operational growth opportunities for environmental service providers.
