Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said Malaysia’s first commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) marked a major leap in the country’s efforts to decarbonise aviation and secure a place in the regional clean-fuel market.
In a report by the New Straits Times, He described the launch as timely, noting that hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation are under pressure to meet global net-zero targets.
Malaysia has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The country’s first SAF facility, EcoCeres Renewable Fuels Sdn Bhd, has been producing commercial-grade fuel at its Tanjung Langsat plant since October.
The facility can produce up to 350,000 tonnes of SAF annually, positioning Malaysia as an emerging regional supplier of low-carbon aviation fuel.
“To meet our national targets, it is essential that we also address high-emitting sectors, namely in aviation.
“Globally, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has set an ambitious net-zero carbon target by 2050, with SAF identified as a critical pathway for decarbonising the industry,” Johari said during a working visit to the plant today.
