The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) will ensure that the management of the nation’s natural resources directly contributes to economic competitiveness, biodiversity conservation and an improved quality of life for the people, in line with the aspirations of the MADANI Government.

In a statement today as reported by The Sun, the ministry said these efforts would be implemented through initiatives such as the Malaysia Greening Programme, the e-Land system, carbon market development and the adoption of environmental monitoring technologies.

“NRES fully supports the 2026 New Year Address by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which outlines the government’s commitment to strengthening the economy, enhancing public welfare and reinforcing national governance.

“As the lead ministry for environmental and natural resource sustainability, NRES is committed to supporting the Prime Minister’s aspirations through the implementation of sustainable, high-impact policies and programmes that align with the values of MADANI Malaysia,” the statement said.

In response to the government’s emphasis on public service integrity and digital transformation, NRES said it will expand the use of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), in environmental monitoring and enforcement operations to enhance service delivery efficiency.

On regional development, NRES expressed full support for the government’s efforts to fulfil commitments under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and ensure that Sabah and Sarawak continue to receive due attention within the national sustainable development agenda.

To date, the government has completed nine of the 13 key demands under MA63, including the transfer of the Bintulu Port operating authority to the Sarawak government in accordance with the signed agreement, as well as the launch of Air Borneo.
