KUALA LUMPUR – According to a survey commissioned by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM), Malaysia’s last haze event resulted in around RM8 billion in welfare losses and 1,700 early deaths. The findings, which are based on statistical modelling rather than proven individual cases, emphasise the economic and public health consequences of rising air pollution. The smog also hampered manufacturing activity by causing staff absenteeism and school closures, reducing corporate productivity and everyday operations. The findings highlight the need for greater pollution prevention methods, industrial environmental management, and operational resilience, notably in the manufacturing and plantation sectors.
