Record-Shattering El Niño Tightens Regional Grids and Bio-Energy Markets

MANILA – The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and international climate organisations warn that the upcoming peak of a record-breaking El Niño is tightening global energy and agricultural markets, sending vegetable oil prices to multi-year highs. Severe dry spells in Southeast Asia are depressing palm oil output expectations in Malaysia while also increasing thermal loads and utility demands on regional industrial grids. As prolonged high-temperature conditions put strain on energy supply chains, manufacturing facilities face higher electricity costs and limited agricultural feedstock availability, emphasising the financial benefits of switching to locally sourced alternative fuels, such as Recycled Fuel Oil (RFO), to ensure operational continuity.
