ISTANBUL – A serious maritime incident occurred in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul’s Silivri district when the Turkish bulk carrier Tugberk Imamoglu collided with the oil tanker Alsu before sunrise. Within minutes after impact, the 90-meter cargo vessel, carrying over 4,200 tonnes of rolled steel, was submerged in depths about 900 meters deep. Search and rescue operations involving numerous surface vessels and helicopter units were promptly launched to the heavily frequented Eurasian maritime region, collecting floating emergency equipment as the search for missing crew members continues. The incident highlights the ongoing operational safety and emergency offloading hazards along major international maritime corridors.
