The Sunway Centre for Planetary Health (SCPH) at Sunway University and RimbaWatch have launched a landmark report titled “Estimating a Fair Share Carbon Budget for Malaysia,” aiming to strengthen the country’s climate ambition based on science and equity.
The report presents a nationally contextualised benchmark aligned with a 1.5°C pathway under the Paris Agreement, offering policymakers, industry leaders, and civil society a clearer framework to guide Malaysia’s climate and development strategies.
The launch event was held at Sunway University’s new building at Sunway Square and brought together senior government officials, researchers, and civil society representatives. Discussions focused on how carbon budget frameworks can enhance national mitigation efforts, support legislative reforms, and improve policy coordination across sectors including energy and forestry.
RimbaWatch highlighted key findings from the report, stressing the importance of credible, measurable, and transparent mechanisms to align economic development with long-term emissions reduction goals. The discussion emphasised not only setting targets but ensuring effective implementation.
A high-level panel discussion featured representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), SCPH, and RimbaWatch, and explored how Malaysia can operationalise a fair share approach within national policy frameworks, including the forthcoming Climate Change Act.
