KUALA LUMPUR – Two new environmental health studies link non-compliant plastic and paper waste recycling facilities in Kuala Langat, Selangor, to significant local river pollution and extensive community health concerns. Water quality evaluations around industrial discharge locations indicated total dissolved solids (TDS) levels greater than 1,100 mg/L, depleted dissolved oxygen levels, and widespread microplastic contamination, as well as higher incidence of respiratory, eye, and skin diseases reported by surrounding inhabitants. The findings have fuelled calls from local communities, health professionals, and environmental authorities for tougher enforcement, stringent liquid effluent restrictions, and an urgent halt to illicit hazardous waste processing.
